STUDY TIPS FOR STUDENTS
STUDY TIPS FOR SECONDARY, COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.
1. MOOD: Set a positive mood for you to study in. Select the appropriate time, environment, and attitude. 2. INVITE THE HOLY SPIRIT: - to stimulate your intellect and retentive memory. 3. UNDERSTAND: Mark any information you don’t understand in a particular unit Keep a focus on one unit or a manageable group of exercises 4. RECALL: After studying the unit, stop, close the book [and put what you have learnt into your own words 5. DIGEST: Go back to what you did not understand and reconsider the information. Contact external expert sources (e.g., other books or an instructor/teacher) if you still cannot understand it 6. EXPAND: In this step, ask three kinds of questions concerning the studied material: • If I could speak with the author, what criticism would I offer? Or what questions would I ask? • How could I apply this material to what I am interested in? • How could I make this information interesting and understandable to other students 7. BODY STIMULATION EXCERSISE REGULARLY – Jog, Run, or Walk Briskly For 15- 20 Minutes in the mornings and evenings. Or • Do aerobics in your room or balcony • Drink a cup of milk every morning- if you are lactose intolerant drink/use soy milk or add lime to the milk and stir (it will become yogurt) and would not run your belly. • Eat meat (at least ¼ lb) Every Day During the Study for an Exam. Avoid Fat by Skinning Chicken (Baked Chicken Is Perfect) – well cooked meat tends to relax the nerves and calm your body. • Eat less to avoid drowsiness. Eat a supply of Raw green vegetables e.g. Calaloo, (Ẹfọ Tẹtẹ), Spinach, Lettuce, Nuts and Carrots with every meal. • Get vitamin supplements e.g. vitamins- C, E, B complex, and Folic Acid. 8. BRAIN STIMULATION- to relax and refresh your brain cells • If you are tired during study, take time out and relax by practicing deep breathing in and out. for 10 minutes then rest or play for another 20 minutes before returning to study Or • Lie on your back and fold your knees up with your feet almost flat on the ground Or • Lie on your back and lift your legs - leaning them against a wall- Helps to Circulate Nutrients into the Brain and Revive It. Do not believe folklore taboos about this. • If you are not allergic to Caffeine, You can Use Mild coffee sweetened with Honey. The combination keeps the brain alert and retentive- honey alone can make you sleepy/dreamy and coffee alone can make you nervous. METHODS I. MAKE YOUR STUDY TIME TABLE -and stick to it II. CRITICAL THINKING: Think Critically Of Any Material, Fact, Figure, Formulation Principle, Theory Presented To You Ask Why, What, How, Where, When? III. CONCENTRATION: Focus On The Particular Task. Don’t Allow Your Mind To Stray Into Other Subjects Or Concerns such as romance, quarrels. IV. MEMORIZING e.g. Formulas V. ORGANIZING PROJECTS e.g. step by step, or according to importance VI. THINKING ALOUD/PRIVATE /SELF SPEECH VII. STUDY IN GROUPS –Join Small Group in Your Subject/Project area: Discussions, Q&A, Critiquing, Brainstorming & Group study helps you to tap into others talents/methods and can expand your horizon of understanding. VIII. AVOID PROCRASTINATION. Start work immediately you get the assignment/project IX. STUDY INDIVIDUALLY – Group Study Should Only Supplement Individual Study. X. SET SOME QUESTIONS 4 YOURSELF ON THE TOPIC/UNIT And Answer Them- Let Other Students Mark & Critique Your Answers. QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF 1.
